Vive la Differential at Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson in Tucson

Posted: Mar 26, 2018

There are a lot of drivers in Tucson who are due for a differential service, but had never heard of a differential before. With front-wheel drive being so common in AZ these days, the differential is just taken care of during a transmission service, so most Tucson folks don't even have to think about it. And rear-wheel drive differentials don't need to be serviced for years, so it's understandable that it's not something on the top of your mind. It's not uncommon for people in Tucson to not know they have a differential, let alone know that it needs service.

To better understand what a differential does, think about a track at any AZ high school. There are lanes marked off on the track. For the longer distance races, the starting lines are staggered. The starting lines for the outside lanes are ahead of the starting lines for the inside lanes. That's to compensate for the longer length of the outside lanes. Staggering the starting lines means that each runner has the same distance to run.

The differential compensates for the difference in speeds between the inside vehicle wheel and the outside wheel in a turn, because they have to travel together through slightly different distances.

It's a very important function. When you think of it, all the power to get a vehicle moving goes through the differential. Most cars weigh between 3,000 and 6,000 pounds (1,400 and 2,800 kg) – trucks even more. The power from the engine goes through the transmission and then through the differential to the drive wheels.

That's a lot of work and requires very heavy duty parts. And those parts need protection. The differential fluid lubricates the gears in the differential and keeps them cool. The fluid eventually gets dirty and worn down. Some kinds of differentials require special additives that break down over time. So manufacturers recommend intervals for when to replace your differential fluid.

Your knowledgeable Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson service technician will drain the used fluid and check it out for metal bits, which could be a sign of excessive wear on the gears. He'll then replace the fluid and install the additives if necessary.

Your Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson service advisor can look up the vehicle manufacturer's recommended service interval or you can check your owner's manual.

At Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson, we've been providing quality automotive service for our valued Tucson customers since . If you need to schedule differential maintenance, or any other automotive service, give us a call at 520.807.5555.

Tire Rotation and Balancing at Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson in Tucson

Posted: Mar 19, 2018

Tires do a lot of work for Tucson drivers. They transfer engine power and braking forces to the road; they handle steering control; and they cushion all those bumps and jolts while driving around Tucson. They also support the entire weight of the vehicle, including you and your passengers. With such important work to do, you want your tires to do their job well. And since replacing tires is fairly pricey, you want them to last as long as possible.

There are three keys to long, even tire wear for Tucson driving:

  • Proper tire inflation
  • Proper wheel alignment
  • Regular tire rotation and balancing

The front tires on a car take the brunt of the steering forces. As they push through turns, the shoulders of the front tires wear down more quickly than the rear tires. Rotating front and rear tires allows them to all wear at about the same rate. That's especially true of front-wheel-drive vehicles whose front tires steer and put the power to the road.

SUVs and pick-ups, especially four-wheel-drives, also tend to wear their tires more unevenly than cars because of their suspension and drivetrain set-up. Your owner's manual will likely contain a schedule for tire rotation. It's usually every 5,000 miles/8,000 km or so.

Also, there are different rotation patterns for different vehicles. Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson will know which is right for your vehicle. That brings us to wheel balancing. When wheels are balanced, they spin on the axle evenly. When they are out of balance, they wobble a bit. That makes the tires wear unevenly and may transmit a vibration to the car. Your friendly and knowledgeable Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson service advisor puts weights on your wheels to balance them out so that they turn true and smooth.

Tires are a big investment for Tucson drivers. They're designed for keeping you safely on the road in Tucson. The cost for regular rotation and balancing is more than made up in extended tire life. And, can you really put a price on your safety and that of your passengers?

Automotive Tips from Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson: Air Conditioning – Common Problem

Posted: Mar 13, 2018

Your auto air conditioning system cools and conditions the air in your passenger compartment when you are driving around Tucson. It also removes moisture from the air to keep your windows from fogging up.

A common A/C problem for Tucson drivers that visit Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson is contaminated refrigerant (the gas that cools the air). The inside of the A/C hoses deteriorates over time and tiny fragments of rubber clog passages. This makes the system less efficient and overworks various components.

Leaks can develop at seals and gaskets and may reduce the amount of refrigerant, causing the system to work too hard to compensate. Dirty components can have the same consequences.

Ask your Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson service advisor for an air conditioning system inspection to make sure everything is up to spec.

Change Your Wiper Blades Twice Yearly at Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson

Posted: Mar 07, 2018

Because 90% of our driving decisions are based on visual information, unobscured vision is paramount. Which brings us to the topic of today's Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson article: wiper blades. While this isn't the most exciting automotive subject, it's important. You wouldn't drive at night in Tucson with your headlights off, but a dirty or streaked vehicle windshield can catch the glare of the sun or on-coming headlights and make it just as difficult to see.

Most of us in Tucson replace our wiper blades when they no longer do the job. They are so worn, hard or brittle that they can't clean the windshield. They may even be falling apart. In other words, we deal with our wiper blades from a failure perspective. We address them when they no longer function. The theory, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," doesn't apply here. Instead, we should think about wipers blades as an important safety system that we should maintain rather than repair.

AZ automotive experts recommend that we change our wiper blades twice a year, in the spring and fall. That way you have functional blades for those Tucson spring showers and winter storms.

When we use our wipers a lot, they get worn from the Tucson road grime and bug juice. Even if we don't use them very often, they're exposed to the sun, heat and cold, and air which cause them to dry out, become brittle and break.

And of course, you need a good windshield washer fluid in your vehicle to help the wipers do their job. Always use washer fluid because plain water doesn't work as well and it can freeze in the reservoir. If you're driving where there are a lot of bugs in AZ, you can pay a little more and get fluid that does a better job of clearing them. If you live where you have extremely cold winters, you can get fluid that resists freezing.

Like everything else in the automotive world, there've been some big advancements in wiper blades, both in terms of the design and the materials from which the blade is made. If you are a local Tucson driver that has a need for better than average windshield wipers, you can pay some more for an upgraded wiper. And if you live where there's a lot of snow and ice in AZ, they make special winter blades that don't clog up and freeze like standard blades.

At one of your fall and spring oil changes, ask your Advantage Auto Repair & Transmisson service advisor which is best wiper blade for your driving conditions. Replace your blades on schedule so you never have to struggle with your vision when you switch on your wipers.
